Posted Jul 11, 2013

The Raiders face the Bears in Oakland in the preseason for the first time since 1977. We take a look at the match-up Through the Years.

On August 23, the Chicago Bears will be making their first preseason trip to the East Bay since 1977, which was the first preseason clash between the Bears and Raiders, a game the Raiders lost 13 -20. The Raiders lead the preseason series 5-4 and the regular season series 7-6.

The Raiders first met the Bears in 1972, which ended in 28-21 victory for Oakland. Since then the Raiders hold a 7-6 record against the 94-year-old franchise. The Raiders have won three Super Bowls appearing in five, as the Bears have won one in two appearances.

70s and 80s Preseason:

The teams split a two-game series in Oakland in 1977 and Chicago in 1978.  In 1977 the Raiders lost 20-13 but then got revenge the next season 14-13. After that the two teams did not compete against each other during the preseason until 1983 when the Raiders lost in their first preseason battle against the Bears in Los Angeles.

Regular Season:

The Bears won their one and only Super Bowl in 1985, yet had a 3-3 regular season series record against the Raiders. This was a period in which the Raiders won all three of their Super Bowls.

90s and 2000s

Preseason: In their first match-up with the Bears in the 90s, the Raiders traveled to Chicago and beat the Bears 20-3. They then hosted them in 1991, winning again with a score of 13-10.

Since then, the Raiders have only played against Chicago once in the preseason when they defeated the Bears 32-17 in Chicago during the 2010 preseason.

Regular season: In the regular season however, the series between the Bears and the Raiders in the 1990s and 2000s has been much more contested. In 1990, the Raiders won 24-10, winning also in 1993 with a score of 16-14. The next five games, occurring in 1996, 1999, 2003, 2007, and 2011 have alternated in victories, with consecutive wins coming from the Bears in 2003 and 2007 with scores of 24-21 and 17-6. The Raiders won the last match-up 25-20 in 2011.
