Browns Hold Off Raiders 20-17

The Cleveland Browns defeated the Oakland Raiders 20-17 in Week 13 action at O.co Coliseum in Oakland.

Raiders TE Brandon Myers tied a single-game team record with 14 catches (WR Tim Brown, 14 catches against Jacksonville, 1997), K Sebastian Janikowski kicked the 40th field goal of 50 yards in the 200th game of his career and QB Carson Palmer completed 34 of 54 pass attempts for 351 yards and two touchdowns, but it wasn’t enough as the Cleveland Browns defeated the Oakland Raiders 20-17.

The Browns won the opening coin toss and deferred their choice to the second half. The Raiders elected to receive the opening kickoff. CB Coye Francies returned K Phil Dawson’s opening kickoff 17 yards to the Oakland 14. The Raiders drive stalled at the Cleveland 41 and P Shane Lechler came on to punt to WR Josh Cribbs. LS Jon Condo downed the punt at the Browns 14.

The Browns drive ended when Raiders S Matt Giordano intercepted a QB Brandon Weeden pass inside the 5 and returned it to the 27. The Raiders were unable to capitalize and were forced to punt after picking up a couple of first downs. Lechler’s 50-yard boot bounced into the end zone for a touchback.

K Phil Dawson’s 41-yard FG gave the Browns a 3-0 lead with 12:59 left in the 2nd quarter.

Francies returned the ensuing kickoff to the 25. The Raiders went three-and-out and Lechler came on to punt. Cribbs returned Lechler’s punt and a facemask penalty moved the ball to the Browns 38. A few plays later Weeden hit WR Josh Gordon for a 44-yard TD. The extra point was good and the Browns led 10-0 with 10:25 left in the 2nd quarter.

Francies returned the ensuing kickoff 32 yards to the Raiders 28. The Raiders went three-and-out and Lechler came on to punt. Cribbs returned the punt to the Browns 36. The Raiders forced a three-and-out. P Reggie Hodges’ punt was downed at the Oakland 30.

The Raiders drive stalled and K Sebastian Janikowski, playing in his 200th game, drilled a 51-yard field goal to cut the Browns lead to 10-3 with 4:28 left in the 2nd quarter.

The ensuing kickoff went for a touchback. The Browns next drive ended when CB Phillip Adams intercepted Weeden’s deep pass down the left sideline at the Raiders 8. The Raiders got in position for a 61-yard field goal attempt, which was just short, and the Browns took a 10-3 lead into the locker room at halftime.

The Browns started at the 35 after the kickoff, a touchback and a penalty on the Raiders. The Raiders held the Browns to a field goal attempt. The 35-yard kick gave the Browns a 13-3 lead with 9:51 left in the 3rd quarter.

RB Jeremy Stewart returned the ensuing kickoff to the Oakland 18. The Raiders drive stalled at the Browns 42 and Lechler’s punt was downed at the 10.

The Browns drove deep into Raiders territory but DT Desmond Bryant got a hand on Dawson’s 28-yard field goal attempt. After Dawson’s first miss of the season, the Raiders took over at the 20.

A few plays later, QB Carson Palmer went deep and connected with rookie WR Rod Streater for a 64-yard touchdown pass. The extra point was and the Browns lead was cut to 13-10 with 17 seconds left in the 3rd quarter.

LB Keenan Clayton dropped Cribbs at the 9 on the ensuing kickoff return. The Raiders forced a Hodges punt. WR Denarius Moore drew a fair catch interference penalty while attempting to field the punt, which gave the Raiders the ball at the Oakland 27.  

The Raiders drive ended when CB Sheldon Brown intercepted a Palmer pass at the Cleveland 6. RB Trent Richardson capped a 94-yard drive with a 3-yard TD run. The extra point was good and Cleveland took a 20-10 lead with 3:27 to go.

The Raiders marched down the field and scored on a 17-yard TD pass from Palmer to TE Brandon Myers. The extra point was good and the Raiders trailed 20-17 with 1 second left. Janikowski’s onside kick attempt went out of bounds and the Browns took possession. A kneel-down ended the game.

The Raiders fall to 3-9 on the season and host the Denver Broncos on NFL Network’s Thursday Night Football.
